The game I envisioned turned out to be… Little Orpheus
During the game I collected a bunch of screenshots, but I don’t want to reveal the details of the adventure. Those who played will understand me.
A game developed by the British studio The Chinese Room, the authors of Dear Esthler and Everybodys Gone to the Rapture . The game that Ivan Loev “sold” to me at the end of the year. A game with almost no gameplay, but an extremely fascinating plot, for which it is worth spending several hours of your life and several hundred rubles of your money.
As I mentioned above, in Little Orpheus the gameplay is almost non-existent and is reduced to walking and solving simple puzzles (fetch, place, turn the lever), rare one-button QTEs and periodic jumping on ropes/platforms. But this is a rare case when the simplicity of the gameplay benefits the narrative. After all, the plot here is presented in the form of an interrogation by KGB General Yurkov of the main character – Ivan Ivanovich – about his adventures in the underworld, inspired by science fiction novels about the Hollow Earth.
And this story is simply magnificent. It is full of dashing turns, caustic remarks from the general, jokes, inconsistencies, clever evasions of answers. The history is really interesting to watch. Each chapter is accompanied by a continuous witty dialogue between two heroes and, in my opinion, this is what justifies the simplicity of the gameplay. Indeed, in the event of frequent “death”, we would have to listen to the same lines of the heroes again, and as we know, a joke is told twice..
There is a lot more that can be said about Little Orpheus (about the cool acting, great music, references to works, a good dose of “cranberries”), but it’s better to play it.
Here, I will leave a link to Ivan Loev’s review of the game, with which I almost completely agree.
P. S. For many people, in my opinion, The Chinese Room, due to its simplicity, can be an excellent entry point into the world of interactive entertainment.
That’s all. I hope you found it interesting and a little informative. Thank you for your attention.
